Post title: Translator Trainer and Lecturer
Duty Station: Dili
Duration: 6 months (with possible extension)
Expected Start date: 30 October 2009

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB:

Under the general supervision of the Council of Coordination (CoC) for the justice sector and the direct supervision the Director of the Legal Training Centre, Director of National Legislation of the Ministry of Justice and UNDP Justice System Program Senior Advisor, the incumbent will be will be responsible for implementing a training programme for translators’ trainees along the period of 12 months.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES/ OUTPUTS AND DELIVERABLES:

  • Assist the MoJ during the capacity assessment of applicants for the posts of translators, as requested;
  • Develop a training programme for translators in conjunction with the relevant departments and institutions of the Ministry of Justice;
  • Source and develop didactic materials for the Legal Training Center and the Translation Department of the Ministry of Justice, donors and other language institutions, as requested.
  • Support and advise LTC boards, LTC Director, trainers and Trainees concerning translation training activities and subjects;
  • Prepare and teach Tetum classes for the translators’ trainees.
  • Prepare and deliver training sessions on translation methodology and techniques, proof-reading and editing, according to the training programme.
  • Provide on-the-job-training to the translators within the Directorate of National Legislation as part of the training programme.
  • Editor / Proof – Reading of the translators work within the Directorate of National Legislation as part of the training programme.
  • Train, if possible, according to knowledge acquired during training, at least one Timorese translator to become team coordinator and head proof-reader/editor.
  • Develop a glossary of legal terminology in Tetum in consultation with the Council of Coordination, the Legal Training Center and the INL, if possible and as requested.

COMPETENCIES:

  • High level language skills in Tetum, Portuguese and English.
  • Tetum speaker and writer in accordance with the standards established by the INL.
  • Ability to prepare and teach classes and pedagogical material.
  • Ability to prepare and implement training plans.
  • Ability to deliver training in translation skills.
  • Ability to provide/supervise on the job training within translation of legal texts.
  • Ability to maintain confidential sensitive information.
  • Commitment to continued learning.
  • Strong skills in the use of computers.

QUALIFICATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience as a professional translator.
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience in Portuguese-Tetum-Portuguese translations;
  • Experience as proof-reader or editor.
  • Experience as a trainer or lecturer.
  • Experience in translating legal documents and legislation.
